Gallipoli: beaches and history

Share on:

The coast of Gallipoli enclosed in its small gulf on the Ionian coast is varied and of great naturalistic value, those in the area are in fact among the most beautiful beaches in Salento .

Starting from the north, immediately after the marinas of Nardò and Montagna Spaccata, there is Lido Conchiglie , a small but splendid seaside resort belonging partly to Gallipoli and partly to Sannicola, a Salento municipality in the Gallipoli hinterland.

Here the coast is partly sandy and partly with low rocky cliffs, with equipped and free beaches and beautiful seabeds suitable for scuba diving.

Immediately after the stretch of white and wild beach with dunes of about 2-3 km of Padula Bianca, an authentic exotic beauty, is Rivabella, another summer seaside resort in the Gallipoli area where you can admire the Torre Sabea, one of the many coastal towers of Salento built in the 16th century for defensive purposes.

One of the most beautiful seaside locations is located within the old town of Gallipoli and is the Purità beach, which takes its name from the church that overlooks it along the coast, overlooking the walls that surround the ancient village.

It is undoubtedly one of the most popular and well-known places in Gallipoli, which thanks to its proximity to the historic center (practically just a few meters!) is frequented by tourists and locals to swim in the sea even with just a few minutes available.

The part of the beach that extends from the historic center along the southern coast of the new city and the Galilei seafront takes the name of Lido San Giovanni, from the first historic beach resort built in this stretch around the 1960s of the last century.

Continuing south, you will find the most modern and recent tourist area of Gallipoli, full of trendy clubs, residences, resorts and all kinds of tourist facilities, known as Baia Verde, which is famous not only for its magnificent natural environment.

The white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters of the sea in this area are truly fascinating, but in the summer they are almost always crowded with thousands of tourists at all hours of the day and night, due to the equipped lidos - the famous Samsara, Praja, Zeus - that are the envy of the noisiest resorts in Ibiza.

Further south along the bay of Gallipoli in the direction of Punta Pizzo, you come across Punta della Suina with other magnificent beaches within the Regional Natural Park of Isola di Sant'Andrea and Litorale di Punta Pizzo.

Although it is a natural area with Mediterranean scrub and a vast pine forest, there is no shortage of equipped beaches and tourist facilities here either.

Towards the promontory of Punta Pizzo which encloses the bay, you come across Lido Pizzo and the Torre del Pizzo, another of the coastal towers erected by Charles V to defend the Salento Peninsula.
